Understanding LSR and File statistics

1) We're undertaking a study to improve performance of our file processing. I'm looking at the output from a run of DFHSTUP against our SMF statistics for one region. I'm trying to understand the report. Where I'm having difficulty is trying to relate the file access stats to the LSR POOL stats. Specifically I'm looking to understand where the DFHSTUP report shows look asides, Reads, and User Writes and how those numbers are related to the number of Reads, Updates, Add, etc. from the file statistics portion of the report. Should I be able to sum the file stats in some way to get the same figures reported in the LSR POOL stats?

2) I'm thinking of putting a VSAM file that has never been in an LSR pool into one. Is there a rule of thumb to decide the number of buffers to assign for this file?

We're CICS/TS 2.3 and z/OS 1.7. Thanks for any help.
